Gone Cat (Part Three)

Read The True Story

Scottie Relaxing

“I’ve seen your cat around my house,” she said. Describing the feline, it sounded like Scottie. She lived nearby so I went and searched the area. I looked up and down alleys and roadways, but I did not find him.
The next day, she called again.
“Your cat is in the next yard,” she said, certain it was him. I immediately got over there. I met her by her house and she said, “He’s over there under that RV.”
“Scottie?” I said.
I peered under the RV and took a good, long look. A Tabby cat hid beneath the large vehicle, but this guy had white feet. Scottie had dark feet. So it wasn’t my boy. I thanked the lady and went home, disappointed.
That evening, thoughts banged around my brain: was that Scottie who got hit by a car? Did that crank caller really have him? Did a fox or coyote kill him? Where was he?
Days past and I got contacted by the local animal pound.
“A cat matching your description of Scottie got brought into the shelter today,” she said. “Can you come down and see if he’s yours?”
“I’ll be right down,” I said, my mood brightened.
I moved fast, driving down the hill to their facility. I stepped inside and told them who I was.
“He’s over here,” the attendant said.
He took me into a back room of meowing cats in cages. He pointed to a large Tabby – too large a Tabby. It wasn’t Scottie. He was lighter in color and different in appearance.
I went home, realizing my assumption of never seeing him again was correct.
Days then weeks then months past with no sign of my kitty. Something had happened to him – I was sure. He was gone.
