Why I Sleep Alone: Scottie

Read The True Story

This is a series of blogs dedicated to the felines who disturbed my precious sleep. Next up is Scottie, our Tabby

We got Scottie as an adult cat, about four years old. He was always a cuddly kitty you could sleep with with no trouble. That all changed one night.

It was late in the evening, Scottie lay beside my left leg, cuddling as he did. I’d had a particularly exhausting day and found myself drifting off to sleep. The door was closed to my bedroom and I thought, “I should let Scottie out before I fall asleep.”

But my tiredness took over, telling me he’ll be fine. You need sleep. I got on my side and let my drowsiness take over. At about 2:00am, I awoke with a start. Scottie peed on my left hip. The urine soaked through my blanket, sheets and my underwear. It ran down my side, waking me up.

I yanked the covers off of me and stood up and out of bed.

“Scottie?!” I said. “What are you doing?”

He ran off the bed and stood by the door.

“I can’t believe you did that!”

I opened it, letting him out.

I took out a clean pair of underwear and went into the washroom. Wiping the cat pee off my skin, I threw my soiled underwear into the laundry. I put on the clean pair and returned to my bedroom. I changed my bed coverings and tried to soak up the urine that had got onto the mattress. I was only slightly successful.

I got back in bed and avoiding the wet spot, I managed to eventually go back to sleep. The next morning, I used some pet urine destroyer to finish cleaning the mattress.

I don’t blame Scottie for peeing on me. I had left him no way to get out of my bedroom to use the litter box. He let me know in the only way he knew how to tell me not to lock him in my bedroom, especially for the eight hours I might sleep.

Needless to say, I never locked him in my bedroom again, leaving the door ajar so he could get out after cuddling and while I slept. Problem solved.
