How I Got Tanzy

Read The True Story

My Cozy Cat Thrillers (Books 1-3) all feature my actual cats: Scottie, Tanzy & Alley. Each feline has an original story as to how they came into my life. Here’s Tanzy’s origin tale:

To start Tanzy’s story, I have to tell you about another wonderful puss. Tahlia was a Tortie with a great loving attitude. I had the pleasure of caring for her while my daughter, Crystal, moved. You see, Crystal loved Tahlia, dearly. So, it pained both of us when Tahlia got sick and died.

At this point, I had Scottie to ease the sadness, but Crystal had no other cat. To fill the void, my daughter adopted Tanzy from the local SPCA.

Being a Calico, Tanzy kinda resembled Tahlia physically but not in personality. Tanzy was not the loving cat Tahlia was. Instead, she hated to be picked up, kissed or even touched, especially if she didn’t know you.

Tanzy had no problem striking someone or cat who invaded her space or was affectionate when she didn’t want it, which was often.

Shortly after getting Tanzy, Crystal moved again and she asked me to take care of Tanzy. I agreed. The feisty feline needed a home, and I have trouble saying no to a cat or my girl.

Tanzy was a cat I had to keep my distance at first or my foot would be clawed. The Calico would also swat at Scottie for no reason. Being the laidback cat, Scottie took it all in stride.

Eventually, Tanzy lowered her guard around me and stopped attacking me if I got too close. Sometimes she would let me scratch her behind her ears without threatening to bite me with her wide open mouth. One day, she surprised me.

I was in my recliner, and Tanzy jumped up between my legs and stared at me. This went on for a few long moments until I scratched the top of her head. Soon, she moved her head around so I could get to her neck, under her chin as well as her ears. A changed cat – well, somewhat anyway.

I still had to be careful if she was in a mood. For the most part, she became a lovey yet combative cat. And I fell in love with her.

When my girl asked if I wanted to keep Tanzy, I answered, “Definitely yes.” I have had Tanzy now for about nine years. She’s mellowed with age but can still be feisty sometimes. I prefer to see her as a loving Calico cat, my Tanzy.
