Overnight With Cats: One

Read The True Story

This is the first of three blogposts telling some cat stories I experienced as an overnight newspaper delivery man.

For several years, I delivered the local newspaper early in the morning, usually starting at 2:00am or so.

During these deliveries, I encountered quite a few late night animals, including cats.

As a cat lover, I was happy to stop and give some attention to those friendly felines.

Most cat encounters were fairly normal. But I had three more unusual experiences with cats that I am sharing with you.

One early morning, I heard a meow and turned to find a Calico approaching me almost as quick as she could go. I stopped and she rubbed my legs. Bending down, I petted and scratched this friendly feline.

After a few minutes of love, I decided I had to get back my paper routes. I was delivering five routes at that time and it took most of the night to get them done.

“I gotta go,” I told the Calico, stepping past her.

It didn’t take her long to walk back in front of me, slowing down her pace to stop me.

Obviously, this cat had not had enough attention from me. So I stopped and gave her some more.

Again, I had to get moving to get all my routes done by 7:00am. So I left her.

And she did it again, stepping in front of me.

I stopped and gave her what she was looking for, until I could no longer wait. I had to get my work done. I walked on.

But she stopped me.

“Sorry, kitty, I don’t have anymore time for you,” I said and stepped over her. But she insisted.

Every time I moved passed her, she came forward and blocked my way. I didn’t know what to do. I was careful not to step on her paws, but there were some close calls.

I almost tripped and fell while trying not to step on her.

I kept avoiding her until she finally gave up. My routes got done on time. But I kept thinking about this (maybe) starved for affection feline.

The next morning walking the same route, I thought I might see her again. But I never saw that Calico again.

I was only subbing on that route until the regular carrier returned, but I keep thinking about that lovey kitty every now and then.

Life is all about cats,
