Overnight With Cats: Three

Read The True Story

This is the third of three blogs telling some cat stories I experienced as an overnight newspaper delivery man.

For several years, I delivered the local newspaper early in the morning, usually starting at 2:00am or so.

During these deliveries, I encountered quite a few late night animals, including cats.

I had three more unusual experiences with cats that I am sharing with you.

During my overnight newspaper deliveries, it was not unusual to see deer in the neighborhoods. Some would allow me close before darting away.

Most were happy to munch on the fallen fruit from an apple tree on one of my five routes.

But one night something scared one deer.

I was walking along one fall early morning when a deer came approaching from my left.

She was about twenty feet from me and running past to my right.

The look on her face was abject horror.

Something was chasing this horrified animal.

I got a little worried. What would cause that deer to run in fear?

I was alone on that route. It was about 3:00am and dark, except for the street lights.

I turned and looked.

Coming up behind the frightened deer was a playfully bounding Burmese cat.

The cat was in full play mode, chasing the deer.

Well, I had to laugh. Not only because such a small cat could chase and frighten a big deer, but because I was relieved it was not something more dangerous.

My laughing caught the cat’s attention and he stopped bounding after the deer.

The Burmese came to me and I bent down to pet and scratch him. He was a friendly fellow and we enjoyed a few moments of kitty loves before he left me there.

I continued with my route, believing this was one of the best days I had delivering newspapers – ever. All because of a deer and one Burmese cat.

Life is all about cats,
